The Margin Problem

(Why Revenue Growth Doesn't Matter If You're Losing Money)

Most founders obsess over revenue.

Monthly revenue. Yearly revenue. Revenue growth rate.

Here's what they don't obsess over enough: profit margin.

And that's the mistake that kills businesses.

I've seen brands doing $5M/year shut down. I've seen brands doing $10M/year file bankruptcy. I've seen founders "succeeding" on paper while personally broke.

Why?

Because they optimized for revenue without optimizing for margin.

Revenue is vanity. Margin is sanity. Profit is reality.

Let me show you what I mean.

The Revenue Illusion

Here's a pattern I see constantly:

Year 1: Brand does $500k in revenue. 35% margin. $175k gross profit. After expenses, maybe $40k net profit. Not amazing, but sustainable.

Year 2: Founder wants to grow. Hires agency. Increases ad spend. Adds team. Revenue jumps to $1.2M. But margin drops to 25% due to discounting and higher CAC. $300k gross profit. After new expenses (agency, team, more ad spend), maybe $20k net profit.

Year 3: More growth pressure. More ad spend. More discounting. More team. Revenue hits $2M. Margin drops to 18%. $360k gross profit. After expenses, losing $40k/year.

On paper: 4x revenue growth over 3 years.

In reality: Going backwards financially.

The founder is working harder. Stressed more. Managing more people. And taking home less money than when the business was smaller.

This is the revenue trap.

And most founders don't realize they're in it until it's too late.

The Unit Economics Reality Check

Let me show you why margin matters more than revenue.

Hypothetical example (but reflects real patterns I see):

Brand A:

  • Revenue: $100k/month
  • Gross margin: 55%
  • Gross profit: $55k/month
  • Operating expenses: $35k/month
  • Net profit: $20k/month
  • Net margin: 20%

Brand B:

  • Revenue: $250k/month
  • Gross margin: 28%
  • Gross profit: $70k/month
  • Operating expenses: $85k/month
  • Net loss: $15k/month
  • Net margin: -6%

Brand A is making $20k/month with less stress, smaller team, simpler operations.
